Caravaggio, Nativity

Sprayed wall, San Salvatore di Fitalia, December 2916

This painting has a particular history. The work, entitled Nativity with Saints Laurence and Francis of Assisi, is considered to be one of Caravaggio’s masterpieces. According to some sources, it was created in 1609 for the Oratorio di San Lorenzo in Palermo and it shows the Nativity: the Madonna turned towards the child, Saint Joseph, Saint Laurence, Saint Francis, one more individual and, on high, an angel. In 1969 this masterpiece was stolen by the mafia and, according to the testimony of some informers, it was destroyed. To date, it is one of the most wanted masterpieces in the world. This reproduction by Andrea Ravo Mattoni, entitled Caravaggio: Nativity, is therefore a sort of restitution to the citizens of Sicily who thus have the opportunity to see again a masterpiece gone missing.
