AN OPEN-AIR PICTURE GALLERY

A RETRIEVAL OF CLASSICISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

“If we taught beauty, we would provide people with a tool against resignation, fear and agreed-upon secrecy. We get readily used to the speculation-generated sudden existence of horrendous buildings with all their squalor: curtains are hung over windows, plants are placed on windowsills, and we soon forget how a place used to be, and everything, simply because it is so, seems to have been so since ever and forever.
That’s why people should be beauty-educated: so that habit and resignation do not sneak into people’s lives but, rather, so that curiosity and wonder stay alive.”

Peppino Impastato

A RETRIEVAL OF CLASSICISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

This project’s most urgent need is that of bringing together. Uniting past and present, Classical art and Contemporary art. To bring together, from a methodical and personal perspective, the techniques that have been learned during academic studies with those developed with the study of the use of spray.
The project can be summarized in this manner: to reproduce Classical paintings on large walls that can be seen by anyone.
The painter’s gesture, in this way, becomes a gesture that connects today’s urban space and Classical painting. No additions, no “creation”, no new images. The performer, in this sense, is more like an orchestra conductor than like a composer, more like an amanuensis than a writer.

THE LINK BETWEEN WORK AND TERRITORY

The intention is that of drawing people’s attention back to all those paintings that have made art history, in order to rediscover Classicism in all its many manners of expression. Each painter and each work chosen have a precise link with the territory where it is reproduced. The performance in this way becomes an occasion for direct interaction with the territory. The place becomes part of the project and an element capable of giving new meaning to the experience of vision of the works.
The object is that of beckoning as many people as possible to the force and beauty of Classical art: bringing paints in the street and to the attention of the street, thus achieving at the same time an operation typical of Contemporary and Post-modern art.

AN OUTDOOR PICTURE GALLERY: THE WORLD’S LARGEST MUSEUM

The project intends to propose a sort of art collection that has so far been exhibited in and “confined” to the rooms of the greatest museums in the world. Not in order to replace but rather in order to exalt the role of museums, to give them new exposure. Indeed, wherever the reproduction is, the museum where the original work is housed is mentioned.
At the same time, there is a goal to awaken cultural interest in the territory where the paintings are reproduced. Territory, institutions and private parties interact with the artist suggesting locations and choosing from a range of possibilities the work of art to be reproduced.
Segments of territory acting as rooms of a huge museum: Messina, Sassari, Varese, Verona, Ticino are the rooms currently being prepared. Each territory becomes a museum room that is easily visitable with a car or a bicycle in one single day, following a fil rouge conceived by the artist and by circumstances.
A project that is potentially infinite.
A utopia thus takes shape, an outdoor exhibit: the world’s largest museum. A gateway to the museum where the original works are on show and for a “retrieval of Classicism in today’s world”.
